The Historic and Continued Success of the Lafayette Parish School System

Education plays a powerful role in shaping a community’s future. For families considering a move, the quality of local schools is often one of the most important factors in their homebuying decisions.

Recent data and insights from the Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) show that our local schools are not only improving — they are becoming a national success story.

Measuring Progress in Education

As Bryan Alleman of LPSS noted during the recent Keaty Realty Group presentation:

“If you want to measure change, don’t change the measure.”

Louisiana’s school accountability system has evolved over the years, which can make comparisons challenging. When grading standards shift, it becomes harder to determine what truly defines an A school, B school, or C school.

As Dr. Kelli Joseph, Superintendent of St. Helena Parish, described it:

“When the bar becomes the barrier.”

Despite these shifting measurement systems, Lafayette Parish schools continue to demonstrate meaningful progress.

A Commitment to School Improvement

The work behind the scenes is extensive. One of the major responsibilities of the district’s accountability leadership is ensuring schools have a clear roadmap for improvement.

Early initiatives like “Pathway to an A” focused on helping schools strengthen academic outcomes and overall performance.

One example of this transformation is J. Wallace James Elementary, which represents the kind of targeted progress LPSS has been working toward across the parish.

Making History in Lafayette Parish

Recent results show remarkable gains across the district.

Some highlights include:

  • 95% of Lafayette Parish schools now hold a C grade or higher
  • No schools received an F
  • 16 schools improved by an entire letter grade
  • Carencro High School experienced a dramatic rise in performance

Carencro High’s improvement has been described as a “rocket ship success story.” These types of gains are not common — they reflect focused leadership, dedicated teachers, and strong community support.

A National Academic Recovery Story

Lafayette’s progress is happening within a much larger story unfolding across Louisiana.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, most school systems across the country struggled to regain academic momentum. National studies show:

-Only 6% of schools nationwide have fully recovered in both English Language Arts and Math.

Yet Louisiana stands apart.

The state ranks:

  • #1 in Reading Recovery
  • #2 in Math Recovery

In fact, Louisiana is the only state where the average student has fully recovered academically from pandemic learning loss.

Within that success story, Lafayette Parish stands out even further.

Local schools have:

  • Surpassed 2019 math performance levels
  • Achieved over 75% of a grade level ABOVE 2019 reading levels

This positions Lafayette as a national educational bright spot.

Moving Beyond State Accountability

LPSS leadership understands that academic scores alone don’t define a successful school.

To better reflect community priorities, Superintendent advisory panels were created to identify what families truly want from their schools.

This led to the launch of a first-of-its-kind homegrown accountability system, built around community expectations.

Schools are now evaluated using key pillars that matter most to families:

  • Safety
  • Culture
  • Student Growth
  • Opportunity

This approach provides a consistent and meaningful measure of school quality, helping parents better understand the environment their children will experience.

What This Means for Homebuyers

School performance plays a significant role in real estate decisions. Many home search platforms — including Zillow, Trulia, and others — prominently display school ratings.

However, these ratings often come from third-party sites like GreatSchools or Niche, which combine:

  • State testing data
  • Federal data sources such as NCES and CRDC

Because of how these systems compile information, ratings can lag behind real-world improvements by one to two years.

That means many online scores may not yet reflect the significant progress happening in Lafayette Parish schools today.

A Community on the Rise

For years, Louisiana was not widely recognized as an academic leader. That narrative is changing.

Today, Lafayette Parish schools are:

  • Improving year after year
  • Surpassing pre-pandemic academic levels
  • Becoming part of a broader statewide education success story

Strong schools strengthen neighborhoods, attract families, and create long-term economic growth.

For those considering moving to Acadiana, the message is clear:

Lafayette is a community where education and opportunities continue to rise.
